A case of Hives/Chronic Idiopathic Urticaria

By Homeopath Sumera Atta

A 39 year old woman came to my clinic with her husband. She was suffering with chronic hives for 2 years. She had tried everything over the counter and prescribed medicines, even very strong doses of steroids didn’t work. Her condition was diagnosed by a skin specialist as chronic idiopathic urticaria.

She said that everyday she woke up and her body was full of hives. She would get swelling in different parts of her face, right eye, left eye, upper lid, lower lid, upper or lower lip etc. The hives were appearing randomly anytime and anywhere on the whole body. The itch would start on a clean skin as a sensation and as she itches it would get worse and eventually hives will come up with burning and redness. This was a very uncomfortable situation for her as she was not able to do anything for her family or around the house.

In my chronic case taking, I asked questions in order to find the root cause. There could be multiple triggers for the hives but in her case I couldn’t find any history that was relative, so I focused on the modalities and sensations of the case. She told me that she felt better in a cool environment because the hives were radiating heat. She liked to be in front of a fan or in the open air. She was itching till her skin was bleeding. The hives were warm but in general she was feeling cold.

Apis Mellifica 30 was given and she was told to report in a week. She called before the week and said that she has stopped taking all the allergy medicines and she is not getting hives anymore. After taking the first dose of Apis, she had a really severe episode of hives within the next 24 hours and after that she didn’t experience any hives or itching. She came to see me after a week, she was very happy and grateful for the end of her two years of suffering.
